Content management isn’t just about posting blogs: it’s about making sure your content is publicised on social media in the right way, and ensuring you respond to comments when they’re posted. Plugins are one very effective way to automate content management chores in WordPress.

Finding the right Facebook plugin for WordPress can be a challenge, though. There are lots of them, and it takes a fair bit of trial and error to find a combination of WordPress plugins that work nicely together.

To help frustrated bloggers with content management and social media, Facebook have launched their own WordPress plugin. At first glance, it looks like they’ve done a great job.

Facebook WordPress plugin features

If you run a multi-author blog, you can set up the plugin to post each author’s posts to their Facebook Timeline (with their permission, of course).

The plugin also allows you to mention people and Pages from the WordPress admin screen while you’re composing a post, just as you do on Facebook. That’s ideal if you want to give your post extra visibility among your friends. Use this with caution, though: your Facebook contacts won’t thank you for spamming them if you over-use this feature.

The plugin can automatically post all updates to a Facebook Page or TimelineWe already use various services to achieve this, but it’s nice to see Facebook offer an easy route.

The plugin also reports analytics via Facebook Insights, if you happen to use them.

You can opt to place Like, Send and/or Subscribe buttons on your blog posts automatically. Button can be placed in the body or in the sidebar (using a Widget), and users can opt in to receiving Recommended content.

Best of all, Facebook comments can be integrated into your blog. We’ve replaced our comments with Disqus, which is really great, but Facebook comments would be more useful for people who prefer to keep everything on one social network.

Unfortunately, I don’t see any way to replace the WordPress login screen with a Facebook login. I realise most users don’t like this anyway, but it does seem to improve engagement when you provide alternative ways to log in to a site.
